SABU

Happy Birthday Andrew! Another year, another candle. This year we decided to celebrate Andrew's birthday locally at Sabu Parramatta for dinner. There's nothing like finding a good Japanese restaurant in the west which ticks all the correct boxes from its stylish interior to the major satisfaction of your taste buds.

Sabu Cigars - $18.00
Minced tuna in a pastry shell with spicy mayonnaise, tobiko and avocado accompanied with saké and Bloody Mary shots.

The Sabu Cigars were surprisingly good although some of us were not too sure about ordering them. I'm glad we did. The fresh minced Tuna was housed was covered in spicy mayo and avocado that hide inside a crunchy pastry shell. At first bite the cigars  provide a   divine crunch followed by the soft creamy tuna filling. The only negative note that I have was the portion size and the price.

 Wagyu Carpaccio - $18.00
Sliced wagyu beef seared with hot sesame oil, yuzu soy and creamy ponzu

I would have to say that the Wagyu Carpaccio made it into my top dishes for this restaurant. The beef was sliced heavenly thin which swam in the beautiful flavors of sesame oil, yuzu soy and ponzu. I could probably eat two whole plates to say the least.

Tempura Scallops - $14.00
Scallop tempura with crispy leeks spicy mayo and ceviche dresshing.

Tempura Scallop were a first and I was pretty blown away with the flavors and texture. I imagined them to be extremely soft considering they are deep fried. I loved the crispiness from the outter batter and the slight softness of the scallops. The dressing went very well with the scollaps by adding a creamier taste but personally I preferred them as they were.

Mushroom Skewers - $16.00
Mushroom and zucchini skewered with truffle mayonnaise and tarragon.

Skewered vegetables for a hefty price of sixteen dollars aren't my thing but hey why not. The first thing that really jumped out from these skewers were the truffle mayo which I could probably have with anything. The grilled Mushrooms and Zucchini weren't anything too special and without the truffle mayo this would definitely be one terrible side dish.

Ice Cream Salad - $19.00
Mix leaf with fried chicken, yogurt dressing, pistachio crumb, and vanilla ice cream

There's three things in this world that I love and those would be salads, Ice cream and Fried Chicken and Bam! Sabu created a salad which contained all three things! Was it any good? hell yeah. The salad was creamy from the Vanilla ice cream and crunchy from the fried chicken. I couldn't ask for more from a salad.

 Green Tea Cooler - $9.00
A summer infusion to refresh the body with apple juice, green tea, mint, strawberries and cucumber

I don't think I've ever had anything so refreshing as this Green Tea cooler. It was packed with flavors and with the combinations of the mint, strawberries and cucumbers make this into one hell of a non alcoholic beverage.

Wagyu Beef - $48.00
300g Wagyu grain fed strip loin steak and shimeji mushrooms.

This beef wagyu with Shimeji mushrooms also made it into my my top dishes for Sabu. I loved the grilled smokey flavors of the beef. It was tenderly soft and cooked to prefection. The mushrooms added extra texture and flavors to the already flavorful beef.

Roast Beef Steak - $38.00
Rangers valley crossbred wagyu, Marble Score 7+ grain feed with mixed green salad and chips

The first thing that was a knock out with this dish were surprisingly the chips, they were super crunchy without being over cooked (Crunchy chips are my absolute weakness). Just like the Wagyu beef with the the mushrooms, This Roast beef was just as perfect. It was heavenly soft that melted. Accompanied with the chips and salad there's definitely nothing to fault in this dish.

Volcano - $10.00
Chocolate mousse with mango sesame cream ,raspberry sauce ,yuki powder and blueberry toppings

I'm usually not mousse kinda person but there's definitely something about this one. Surprisingly the flavours were quiet subtle but they all worked together with the added bits and pieces of the raspberry sauce ,yuki powder and blueberry toppings. Although the textures were all soft there were different variation of softness which was quite nice.

Snow - $16.00
Pistachio and matcha crumbs, yuzu parfait, pistachio ice cream and pine foam

At first sight this looked like a snow ball that came out of a fairy tail forest that was covered with yellow and orange flowers. Inside was hide the yuzu parfait and pistachio ice cream. What seemed like whipped cream was the pine foam which had a beautiful hint of citrusy lime or lemon. I found that the combination of the three flavours of citrus, pistachio and cream felt almost overwhelming but somehow keeps you coming back for more. Also the added crumbs or pistachio and matcha definitely adds an extra lift to the snow dessert.

Tronchetto - $45.00
Consists of dulce de leche, chocolate chip gelato, vanilla mousse, and flourless chocolate sponge, finished with a white chocolate ganache (orange coloured finish).

There's alway room for second dessert and since this would be my first time trying out a Messina cake, I was pretty excited. Messina cakes definitely have the aesthetic wow factor although unfortunately this ice cream cake ended there. I personally found the ice cream cake somewhat average with one hell of a price tag. I found that the flavours seemed to merge into one instead of being identifiable without trying to pin point the elements. Even though I found the ice cream cake average I couldn't deny my love for dulce de leche and thankfuly that was the only flavour I could taste.
