DEVON CAFE

Each food experience to their own, said no one said ever!
A turn or two from Central Station and you'll be at Devon's cafe. The Cafe has a simple but modern decor that embraced the appearance of raw wood. Devon's cafe is well known and blogged about for their breakfast menu and most recently they have started serving their dinner menu too. This definitely had started to circulation some enticing images. A cold winter later and Christine and I made our way into Devon's cafe for dinner.

Devon's Lobster roll  - $15.50
Lobster, Raddish, tatsoi, kewpie

First to be delivered onto our table after thirty minutes wait was the lobster rolls. Christine and I could not wait for these rolls considering how highly talked about they are on food blogs and instagram. The moment of truth came with a crushing stale bread and an over powering taste if mayo in our mouths. We both looked at each other in search for some form of food 'gasams but nothing surfaced.

Chinese Egg Custard - $29.00
Shitake, fungus, yellow noodle flower, chinese fried bread and Perigord black truffle

Another dish Christine was excited about was the egg custard which is very much hyped about. The modern Asian inspiration is certainly aesthetically pleasing however I did find the flavors in the dish bland and just salty. The rich creamy texture of the egg became sickening very fast and the shitake, fungus, yellow noodle flowers and black truffles got lost within the saltiness of the dish.  There was nothing in the egg custard that really wow'd us both.

Wagyu 6+ Striploin - $32.00
 Ponzu and garlic

Wagyu is always appreciated and this visit should have a serving at our tabe. The Wagyu was surprisingly very soft  which was devine although the flavouring of the Ponzu and garlic didn't do the wonderful cut of meat any justice. I felt that the wagyu was bland and was really in need of something to help lift the flavors.

Cultivated Mushroom Parcels's - $12.00

A collection of Asian mushrooms cooked in a parcel with butter and an added zest of lemon really lifted the mushrooms. They were a treat to eat.

Fried Ice Cream Bao's - $7.00 each

I had such expectations from this fried ice cream and at first bite I saw myself in slow motion slowly crunching my face and being confused with the texture and taste of the dessert.
the buns texture was so soft that it felt like raw dough then the crumbed fried ice cream just melted away as if it was only injected with milk not ice cream. The best bit of this should have been the caramel and unfortunately that too went sourly south! It felt think as if they added cooking flour, It didn't taste sweet like caramel but it looked like caramel.

Coconut jelly, guava sorbet, freeze dried pineapple - $11.00

The grand finale did not disappoint out of anything it went with a BANG!
The flavours brightened our disappointing night. The Guava sorbet was refreshing and tropical. The freeze dried pineapple added a sweet crunchy texture to the coconut jelly. Overall this dessert was a tropical delight in a bubble.
