Today could not have been more perfect. First off we actually woke up early to start out the day! First thing, when driving into Newtown is always the hunt for parking and today luck was definitely on our side because we found parking right on O'Connell street, which is where my surprise destination awaited.
The outside of Brewtown just oozed industrial chic. Simple, clean and with a touch of modernism with the floor to ceiling glass window. This space was a big part of Newtown culture as a bookstore and I really like how they left the outline of the last sign. This portrays a sense of transition while still connecting with heritage. The industrial theme was carried through inside with their furniture, exposed ceiling beams, raw bricks and lighting fixtures. Although I did like the interior, one thing that bothered me are the boxes that are openly shelved and are floating about in the restaurant. Unfortunately I don't find that chic at all, au contraire, just a little messy.
Brewtown isn't just an eatery but they also have a section upstairs where you are able to purchase clothing pieces, homely accessories and random tidbits. It's cool and different but be prepared to spend.
Latte - $3.50
There's nothing like a good latte although they seem to be as rare as unicorns. This latte was certainly a unicorn. It had a good smooth blend of espresso and warm, not hot milk frothed decent leaving a creamy goodness.
Piccolo Latte - $3.50
My favourite mix of espresso to milk, the piccolo latte was good from the shot to the frothing of the milk. It was silky smooth all the way through
House made fresh lemonade - $5.00
There's nothing like homemade lemonade and thankfully it wasn't disappointing.
The lemonade was served tangy and quite strong, although that can be remedied quite easily with a little extra sugar and water. A great non soft drink alternative at the table.
Veggie Burger - $12.00
with Swiss cheese, pickled beetroots, quinoa patty and crunchy salad
Hands down this has to be one of the healthiest sounding burgers I have ever had. It was hearty and surprisingly heavy for its size. The pickled beetroots accompanied the quinoa patty very well and added the zing to make sure each bite was not monotonous with just quinoa. The side salad with micro herbs, sliced radish and purple cabbage was nice, not overly powering and didn't take away from the burger itself.
Squid ink linguine, garlic, prawns, kale
and Parmesan -$18.50
This is looked so deceivingly small but don't be fooled! Its surprisingly filling and extremely flavorsome. The squid ink linguine was silky and delicate with a soft salty taste. The kale was my hero in this dish rather than the squid ink because it was looked after and not overcooked as I have seen at other places which leaves it rather unappetizing. Thumbs up to the creative minds who put it on the menu, it delivered as a sure choice as a wholesome meal with a novelty edge.
Cronuts - $4.50 each
There's been so much spoken about the Cronuts and lets just say we definitely weren't disappointed. The round Cronuts were absolutely divine considering its not your average doughnut. Its a hybrid of a doughnut and a croissant. The flakey soft Cronuts come in several flavors like jam filled, sugar coated or dark chocolate covered. Since lunch was very filling we ordered two for the road. One jam and one sugar coated Cronut. The idea was to take them home and warm them before eating, but it is recommended to eat while you are there experience says to take a seat and eat it while you are there contemplating your next bite. A little oily but oh so nice, you eat a couple and hit the hills in the afternoon to fix your conscience.
