SPECTRUM NOW 2015

A Friday night like no other!  Christine and I ventured out to eat our hearts out at the The Sydney Morning Herald Spectrum Now. We knew the rain would definitely be a major factor for the night so we made sure we brought our umbrellas  along with our empty stomachs. Food festivals are usually about the popular food stalls and snaking infinite line ups but the only up side to the rain was the fact that most people aren't prepared to brave it out! Thank you to those people because we were able to zip in and out of food stand in no time.

Traditionally you would make your way over to the savoury hot foods but tonight was an exception due to N2 and Black Star Pastry collaborating to make a "The Cake Smash". Its the glorious combination of the famous Strawberry Watermelon Cake along with N2's nitrogen gelato. This genius creation was on a daily limit and it was only sold to those who knew about it. It wasn't on the menu but for those who knew were smart enough to know to line up for it. Thankfully due to the moody wet weather there wasn't a massive line.

The mixture of the Strawberry Watermelon cake and gelato was incredible! It tasted every bit of the infamous cake but turbo charged with the creamy silky gelato. True to the cake the gelato was dressed and topped with pieces of chopped pistachios and dried rose petals. A surprise awaited at the bottom of the gelato cup with chunks of watermelons. If this was sold by tubs, I'd bring a bucket!

Next was Bao Stop. Oh boy! these were extremely wonderfully. The first one I tried was the Peeking Duck Bao which had a rich soy sauce glazing. The duck was juicy and tender and with the added fresh cucumber and shallots made this Bao a bundle of joy. The second was the Crispy fried Chicken Bao with creamy slaw. Fried Chicken can never do no harm, this bad boy was crispy with the added crunch of the crisp slaw and soft outer bun was fried Chicken heaven. The last was the Mushroom, personally for me the  Mushroom Bao raised above the other two! The flavor that the mushroom was intense and tasted of abalone. It had a soft meaty texture with the fresh taste of sea salt and abalone. I know it was mushroom but boy! this just blew my taste buds away!

Messina can never disappoint both in presentation and taste delivery. The Messina stand screamed out retro with its Red, orange and baby blue colored sand. It stood out from the rest of the food stalls which where house in identical raw wooden stalls. The Picnic and Bounty ice cream bars circulated through Instagram like wild fire. So yes it was only about time that we would eat, add to our food bucket list and post our images on my instagram.

Christine and I bought the two ice cream bars to shared. This is always the smartest way to eat your way through food festivals that also allows you to taste almost everything on offer. The ice cream bars were surprisingly large. The first was the Picnic and man it was better then an actual Picnic bar.It was chocolatey, crunchy, creamy all in the same time. It was exactly like eating a Picnic bar but with the added benefit of gelato. The second was the Bounty which I unfortunately didn't enjoy as much. Everything was there, like the creamy coconut-y flavour and the coconut flakes that makes the Bounty bar. However with the added passion fruit in between the chocolate coating and the gelato was overwhelming with an intense sweetness. It just threw me off, I couldn't finish my half sadly.

Since Christine and I haven't had a Mary's experience we were pretty excited to finally try the famous Mary's burger. After eating our first half of bucket list foods we marched our way over to Mary's food stall and ordered two Mary's burger. At first when the burgers were handed over with its lovely burger wrapping my first thought was how small it looked but hoped that the small package came with greater favors. Did it live up to the hype? yeaaah I guess. I definately do see it more like taste it. I definately like the meatiness of the beef and the smokey cheese that oozed in the patty but the only thing I didnt like were the buns which tasted cheap. Yes the burger was good but unfortunately I can't see why they would sell them for $12 each for something so small with one patty but none the less it was good.

Kimchi fries were Christine's first choice of words for this food festival. " you have to try the kimchi fries", Yes she was definitely onto something. The Kimchi fries are a combination of crunchy fried chips with Kimchi topped with either your choice of Chicken or beef (ours was chicken) cheese, shallots and finally dressed with mayo and chili sauce. OMG! It was a divine food gasam. Everything was happening all a once with the crunchy and soft flavorful Kimchi. Nothing dominated but rather they worked well with each other.

Hoy Pinoy was our last food stop for the night and it was a good way to end the night. Their food stall was hard to miss with their jeepney Hoy Pinoy signs and the very aromatic barbecued meats on the sizzling hot coal. They offered three different barbecued meats, Chicken, Beef and Pork. We decided on the chicken which was extremely amazing! It was very authentic Pinoy barbecue flavor which was evident in the thick smokey soy sauce marinade. The Chicken was cooked to perfection which just fell apart with each bite.

Once the rain stopped the whole food fair looked beautiful in the evening. It had such a romantic vibe with its soft lighting from the lanterns and light hangings. People finally started to arrive since the rain stopped and since Christine and I clearly didn't care about the rain we'd eaten under our umbrella and braved it out. Now it was time to call it a night and we left for the Chinatown food Markets.
